Winter in Maidan Wardak Province, in central Afghanistan, is harsh. Temperatures can plunge to -20 degrees Celsius, and most families do not have a way to heat their homes. Many cannot afford to buy their children warm winter clothes. UNICEF provides kits packed with winter clothes to families in need. These kits include clothing for a family of 7, with essentials like boots, coats, scarves, gloves, socks, and hats. Families were chosen to receive kits following assessments by social workers to determine which families had children most in need or most vulnerable to violence, exploitation, abuse or neglect.

Story: Every winter one out of three districts in Afghanistan becomes inaccessible, leaving thousands of children at risk of diseases. Ahead of the winter, UNICEF is sending 36,000 newborn kits to inaccessible districts to ensure that newborn babies are kept warm.

Aquila, a UNICEF-supported community health worker, poses with some of her children in Shahper village, Khas Uruzgan District, Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. Aquila works with her husband, Zahir, and they are the faces of local health care. As community health workers for the neighbouring villagers, they provide health, hygiene and nutrition education, malnutrition screening, rudimentary health care and referral service for their friends and neighbours. In a remote corner of the province, their community is often cut off for months during the winter. “We do our best, but there isn’t a lot out here,” says Aquila. “In the Winter especially we can be cut off. Then we’re on our own.”
